Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions

Continuing our celebration of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, PetravelR™ is spotlighting Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions on Adopt a Friend.

Young at Heart

Young at Heart is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving the lives of senior pets in the Chicagoland area. Young at Heart rescues 100% of their senior pets from open-door shelters, reducing the euthanasia rate for adoptable senior pets at area shelters. Young at Heart also provides community outreach to help keep senior pets out of shelters in the first place, from providing pet food to low-income food pantries, to educating the public on senior pet care, to helping other organizations network their senior pets.

Adopt a Sr LoniYoung at Heart’s long-term goal is to open Illinois’ first adoption center & sanctuary for senior dogs and cats. This safe haven will be their homestead – a place where more dogs and cats get a second chance at a loving home, a place where age is just a number, and a place where the care and comfort of those with greyer muzzles and stiffer joints than their younger counterparts come first and foremost. A place where all senior pets can find their happily ever after.

Young at Heart is a volunteer-based organization, and their big-hearted volunteers are people just like you with a love of older pets and some time to spare. They need volunteers to help run special events, transport pets, help with fundraisers, adoption events and more! If you’re in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, you can make a tremendous contribution to Young at Heart’s wonderful work by volunteering your time and your talent.  They are also starting a new Junior Volunteer program for children age 10 or older to volunteer with a parent.

Young at Heart also needs volunteers to provide temporary homes for a rescued dog or cat until a permanent “forever” home can be found. It also provides time for a dog or cat to adjust or re-adjust to living in a home, and to learn socialization and good manners. For some senior pets, the foster home also provides time to recover from an illness or medical procedure before he or she can be made available for adoption.  Foster homes are the heart of the organization, where senior pets get the love and comfort of being in a home while waiting for adoption.
