Pet Safe Ice Melt

Did you know that many of the products used to melt ice on sidewalks and steps can be harmful to pets, as well as small children and the environment?

Many de-icers are made with harmful salts. Rock salt and other salt-based ice melters contain sodium chloride or potassium chloride which can heat up to 175 degrees when exposed to water, ice, and low temperatures. Exposure to these salt-based ice melters can can be especially dangerous to dogs. The salts get frozen into the dogs paws and fur. When they are inside with higher temperatures, these salts can burn the skin causing ulcers and redness to tissue which can lead to bacterial infections. Dogs can also develop intestinal problems and inflammation of the stomach (gastritis) from licking the salt-based products off their paws.

Safe Paw Ice Melter 1

PetravelR™ recommends using a salt-free ice melter, such as Safe Paw.  According to the manufacturer, Safe Paw benefits include:

  • Guaranteed safe for pets and children
  • Environmentally safe
  • Won’t harm decking of any kind
  • Safe on asphalt, concrete, and pavers
  • Safe on plants and shrubs
  • Proprietary traction agent (helps prevent
  • slips and falls)
  • Won’t stain or destroy flooring

NYC Architects for Animals

The Fifth Annual Architects for Animals: Giving Shelter, an evening to benefit the NYC Feral Cat Initiative of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, will be held on Thursday January 14, 2016, 6:00–8:00 pm, at the Steelcase Showroom, 4 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019.

NYCFCI-BannerArchitectsforAnimals2016-625

For the estimated tens of thousands of cats who live in backyards, vacant lots, alleys, and numerous other outdoor locations throughout New York City, wintertime is especially difficult. Many of these cats are cared for by dedicated caretakers who feed them daily, monitor their health, and go to great lengths to have them spayed or neutered through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). TNR has proved to be the only truly humane and effective way to manage feral cat colonies and reduce their numbers over time.

For the past five years, some of New York’s most prestigious architectural designers, through an inventive project called Architects for Animals, have been helping the city’s kitties by creating imaginative winter shelters to provide them with a refuge from the cold. A new collection of unique, inspired Architects for Animals winter shelters will be presented for public viewing before they are donated to Certified TNR Caretakers and placed in locations throughout the city. Among the architectural firms participating in this year’s exhibition are Biber Architects, CallisonRTKL, deSoto studio Architects, Docomomo US, HLW International, Narofsky Architecture, and Spacesmith.

NYC Animals 2016

Admission is a $25 donation ($10 for Certified TNR Caretakers) and includes the exhibit, hors d’oeuvres, and cocktails. You may RSVP in advance online through January 12, and a limited number of tickets also will be available at the door. No paper tickets will be issued; your name will be on the list at the door.

Play Fetch in the Snow!

Those tennis balls not working so well in the snow?  If you’re looking for a good “go fetch” toy for your dog this winter, try the Zisc Flying Disc made by West Paw Design.

According to the manufacturer, these dog toys made from Zogoflex® material are tough and durable. But they aren’t rigid, so they are gentle on your dog’s teeth. The Zisc Flying Disc also floats, so it won’t sink right into the snow.

The Zisc® is eco-friendly, recyclable and made in the USA. It comes in two sizes and three colors, plus a new glow in the dark version. Just put Zisc Glow in a window or under a bright light for five minutes and you’re good to glow.  About $11 for the small Zisc and $15 for the large size; the Zisc Glow runs a couple of dollars more. Buy them at WestPawDesign and many online retailers, including DogTuff.com, Chewy.com, OnlyNaturalPet and northwest pets.com

Mid Ohio Animal League cat

Mid-Ohio Animal Welfare League is a tiny group of volunteers from Columbus to Cleveland Heights. In their 10 years of existence, they have fostered and placed over 400 cats and dogs and brought low-cost spay/neuter services to thousands of animals. They focus on helping the neediest of animals that many rescues would ignore due to health status/age/etc. Many of their current fosters are long-term or sanctuary animals due to chronic or terminal medical conditions. But they also have healthy animals available for adoption and work with a small rescue in rural KY by bringing their fosters up north where they actually have a chance to find forever families.
