Located in Gulfport, the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM), is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. In 2014, HSSM cared for nearly 8,000 homeless pets. HSSM is a 100% independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receives no government dollars or funding from any national organization. They depend on the community to raise the $2.6 million it takes to operate each year.
HSSM has always been committed to ending pet overpopulation and homelessness on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. However, as an open-admission shelter in the Deep South, HSSM has been faced with a disproportionately large number of homeless pets in need.
In January of 2012, HSSM’s Board of Directors adopted Countdown to Zero, the most progressive initiative ever undertaken by the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Countdown to Zero commits HSSM as an organization to eliminating the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets. Their dream is to make South Mississippi a truly humane community where every pet lives out his/her life in a loving home. When HSSM achieves this goal, they will be the first community in the Deep South to achieve this milestone!
There are many ways that you can help the Humane Society of South Mississippi achieve their goal – you can adopt a homeless pet, spay and neuter the pets you already own, and microchip your pets and give them ID tags so that they can be returned to you if lost and not end up as shelter strays. You can also volunteer your time, become a foster family for homeless animals, or make a tax-deductible donation to HSSM.
Have an unaltered dog or cat? HSSM’s Louise Fenner Claiborne Spay Neuter Clinic provides over 10,000 low-cost, high quality spay/neuter surgeries each year to ease the pet overpopulation crisis in South Mississippi and to better the lives of the pets residing in the community.
Thinking about a new pet? HSSM is home to over 300 pets on any given day, most of which are looking for new forever homes! Your new best friend could be waiting at HSSM right now. If you are interested in adopting a pet, you can view adoptable dogs, cats, and other pets online, or head right to the HSSM shelter to see them in person. When you have spotted a pet you’re interested in, trained adoption counselors or volunteers will be on hand to discuss what you’re looking for in your new pet. HSSM provides this service to make the best match for you and the animals.
Even if you don’t live in South Mississippi, you can make a virtual visit to HSSM!
The Humane Society of South Mississippi is supported entirely through contributions of money, time, and in-kind gifts from the public. There are so many ways for YOU to help the homeless pets of South Mississippi!
Donate online, join the monthly giving program, make an honorarium or memorial gift, or purchase a memorial brick for a beloved pet or pet lover. HSSM also welcomes planned giving, designated donations for the purchase of much-needed supplies and equipment, and contributions to special funds such as the Chicken Soup Fund for veterinary care, Spay Neuter Incentives Program (SNIP), and the Love Train program that saves more animals’ lives by sending them to partner shelters and rescues across the United States that have low intake numbers but a higher demand for adoption.
PetravelR™ urges you to support your local shelters and rescues by adopting, volunteering, and donating. And remember that spaying and neutering helps reduce overpopulation and makes your pets better family members.
