American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1990 to provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. They offer permanent sanctuary to abandoned and lost tortoises, as well as those that are confiscated from law enforcement and require temporary housing. ATR has saved more than 3000 turtles and tortoises since its inception.
American Tortoise Rescue also acts as a national clearinghouse for information about the care, feeding, and rehabilitation of endangered and captive-bred tortoises. In addition, ATR is an advocacy group working to abolish to abolish “live market” slaughter of turtles, the illegal sale of hatchlings and turtles under four inches, the cruel importation and exportation of a variety of species. ATR works to protect the desert tortoise from collectors, off-road vehicles, and loss of habitat. You can read more about immediate threats in Turtles In Danger.
ATR only re-homes through Facebook due to their huge commitment to education and the annual World Turtle Day event. If you are interested in adopting or need to place a turtle or tortoise please email email@example.com.
American Tortoise Rescue needs your support to continue their important work. Because turtles are not warm and fuzzy, they are often way down on the list for donations, yet veterinary bills. food and housing are very expensive. You can donate online or contact ATR at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. In addition to monetary donations, ATR can always use any of the following materials:
- Postage stamps – first class and postcard
- Lexmark cartridges – #34 and #35
- TB syringes
- Blue hospital small towels or hand towels
- Reptomin turtle sticks or Wardley brand
- Office supplies such as 9×13 envelopes, copy paper
- Gift cards – Home Depot, Do It Center, Ralph’s, Staples, Pavilions, CVS, gasoline cards (for picking up and delivering)
All donations are gratefully accepted!
