KIP * 10-year-old male beagle mix

KIP * 10-year-old male beagle mix

Howdy, howdy, howdy! I’m Kip, a very sweet beagle mix boy who loves loves loves people! I am good with other dogs who respect space, and I do well with kitties. I really enjoy being outside and having a yard, and I may have spent some time outdoors in my previous life. I am house-trained but I need a firm schedule to help me stay accident-free. I love to run through the yard with the wind in my ears, and then a good toss and wrestle with my toys. I am quite the sweetheart and cannot wait to have a family of my own again!

LOUIE * 8-year-old male domestic shorthair

LOUIE * 8-year-old male domestic shorthair

Hi there, I’m Louie, an incredible adorable and sweet little dude. I get along with other kitties and enjoy a good scratch under the chin, but most of all I enjoy being loved. I’d make a great companion as I am a very good listener when you come home after a long day, a great masseuse as I “make biscuits” with my paws on your tummy, and an incredible lap warmer while you watch your favorite show on a chilly fall night. More than anything I dream of a family of my own again, and I’d love to be a part of yours.

ELLIE * 10-year-old female lab/shepherd mix

ELLIE * 10-year-old female lab/shepherd mix

Hi! I’m Ellie, a very sweet, very happy 10-year-old shepherd/lab mix. I am so happy to meet everyone, and I love other dogs. Not kitties though. I really don’t like kitties. I am a very lovely lady who enjoys spending time with people and being loved on. I would prefer a home where someone is home a lot, as it seems as that is what I was used to in my previous life. I really am a good girl, and I just adore my people. I’d love to find a nice, quiet home where someone can love me all day long. Are you the family that I’ve been dreaming of?

SASSY & SMOKEY * 12-year-old domestic shorthair and domestic longhair

SASSY & SMOKEY * 12-year-old domestic shorthair and domestic longhair

Hi there! We are the dynamic duo, Sassy & Smokey! Actually, we’re more like the laid back, snuggle with you, watch birds out the window all day sort of duo, so if you like that speed better than dynamic, let’s talk! We are about 12 years old, and have lived our whole lives together. We’d like to live them out together, too! Sassy (black) got a nice shave down of her black coat to get rid of a matted mess of hair, and got a lot of rotten teeth pulled, too. I’m so sweet and I feel so much better! Smokey (grey) is sweet as can be. We love to snuggle together and keep each other company, but we’d love to keep you company, too! You will need to have room for both of us on your lap as we both love to snuggle with you on the couch! Sassy’s mouth hangs open a little bit – she had horrible dental disease when she came in and we suspect her jaw may have been fractured in the past. It does not effect her ability to groom herself, eat, drink or breath. Sassy will need someone to brush her on a regular basis. If you have it in your heart to give two senior kitties a forever home, please fill out an adoption application!

MERLIN * 12-year-old cattle dog mix

MERLIN * 12-year-old cattle dog mix

ADOPTIVE OR SANCTUARY HOME NEEDED: Merlin, a 12 year old Cattle dog mix, is the sweetest and gentlest of dogs. He is full of love, is perfectly house trained and does well with other dogs of all kinds. He enjoys nothing better than a comfy bed and is a champion snuggle bug. He came to us after being picked up as a stray by animal control and after a thorough examination by our vet, he was found to have a substantial heart murmur that required further evaluation. After seeing a cardiologist, it was determined that he has a heart condition that will require periodic monitoring and a daily medication. He is currently in a foster home and doing very well, but because of his heart condition he is considered a dog with special health needs. While his heart may not be the healthiest it is full of love and he would be a wonderful companion.  If you would like to consider him for adoption or sanctuary, please contact Jen at

PetravelR™ urges you to support your local shelters and rescues by adopting, volunteering, and donating. And remember that spaying and neutering helps reduce overpopulation and makes your pets better family member!

La Quinta Inns are Pet Friendly!

If you plan to hit the road with your pets this holiday season, keep in mind that all La Quinta Inns & Suites are pet-friendly.

la-quinta-logoPetravelR™ knows that it’s not always easily to find nice comfortable lodging for the night that will also welcome your furry family members.  So we were happy to learn that La Quinta not only allows pets, but they don’t tack on additional room fees or pet deposits to your room charges!

la quinta pet policy

Here is La Quinta’s current pet policy:

• We love all kinds of animals, but only domestic pets, like cats and dogs, are allowed to stay at La Quinta.
• While our rooms are spacious, no more than two (2) domestic pets are allowed per room.
• When you check in, let the front desk staff know you’ll have a pet in your room. You’ll need to sign a Pet Policy Agreement, and then you and your pet can make yourselves at home.
• Be sure to keep your pets on a leash or in a carrier if they’re outside your room.
• Pets (s) shall remain within your control at all times, either on a leash or in a carrier. Pets may remain alone in a guestroom so long as the pet is well-behaved. However, if your pet is disturbing other guests/staff or causing damage, then it cannot be left alone and must remain in your control.
• With the exception of authorized service animals, pets are not allowed in the breakfast area, the fitness center and the laundry room or at the pool.
• Please contact Housekeeping to make arrangements for room cleaning. Because we can’t clean your room while you and your pets are present, we suggest you schedule a time during the hotel’s normal cleaning schedule for us to clean while you are out and about. (Maybe this is a good time to think about a walk?)
• In consideration for other guests, please clean up after your pets, and keep them within your control at all times. If your cat is staying with you, you’ll need to provide a litter box.
• We count on you to prevent your pet from making excessive noise, being disruptive or aggressive to other guests. If your pet is deemed dangerous, harmful or disruptive, hotel management has sole discretion to require you to find other accommodations. The hotel also reserves the right to contact animal control to have a pet removed.
• If your room requires excessive cleaning, or if damages are incurred as a result of your pet’s actions, the hotel may charge for additional services and repairs.

la quinta pets

PetravelR™ notes that the policy doesn’t limit the pets permitted to dogs and cats, it simply says “only domestic pets, like cats and dogs, are allowed,” so we’re thinking you can probably bring your pair of house rabbits or guinea pigs, but not your pygmy goats.  Always best to check with the company or particular location in advance, of course.

Wishing you safe and happy travels!

Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

This week’s Tuesday Tips is all about keeping your pet safe of Thanksgiving. Whether you’re traveling across the country, across town, or staying at home, here’s some important advice from the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has these recommendations for keeping your pets safe and healthy at Thanksgiving:

  • Carefully consider whether to take your pet with you on a trip (air travel can be dangerous).
  • If Fluffy and Fido are staying home while you travel, be sure to choose a pet sitter or boarding kennel wisely.
  • Wherever your pets spend Thanksgiving, dogs and cats should all have collars and tags with ID giving a way to reach you.
  • Keep your pets well during cold weather.
  • The excitement of a party may overwhelm some pets, so provide your cat or dog with a quiet, out-of-the-way room during holiday parties.
  • Avoid the urge to give your pets table scraps, especially bones. Bones easily splinter and can cause serious health problems, even death.

The ASPCA offers this advice about sharing Thanksgiving food with your pet:

  • Turkey: Do not feed your pet raw or undercooked turkey, which could contain salmonella. If you offer a nibble of turkey, be sure that it is well-cooked and that all bones have been removed.
  • Stuffing or Dressing: Sage and many other herbs can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets if eaten in large quantities, because they contain certain essential oils and resins. Cats are especially sensitive to the effects of certain essential oils.
  • Bread Dough: When raw bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise in his stomach. As it expands, the pet may experience vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating, which could become a life-threatening emergency, requiring surgery.
  • Cake Batter: Raw cake batter — especially if it includes raw eggs — could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.
  • Overfeeding: A few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a taste of mashed potato or even a lick of pumpkin pie shouldn’t pose a problem. But overindulgence in holiday foods can cause your pet stomach upset, diarrhea, or a serious case of pancreatitis. The ASPCA recommends that you keep pets on their regular diets during the holidays, but provide them with some extra treats, like doggie chew bones or a Kong toy stuffed with their regular food with a few added tidbits of turkey, sweet potato or green beans, and dribbles of gravy.

PetravelR™ wishes you and your pets a safe and happy holiday!

Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions on Adopt a Friend!

As part of our ongoing celebration of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions is featured this week on PetravelR’s™ Adopt a Friend!

Young at HeartYoung at Heart is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving the lives of senior pets.  Traditional shelters with an open-door policy, a policy that means they must accept every animal that walks through their door, run out of space. Too many pets, not enough homes. Those that are older are considered “unadoptable.” And because they are older, they are the first to be euthanized. Their fate is sealed simply because they were loved longer than the other homeless pets around them.

Young at Heart’s mission is not only to save the lives of those senior pets, but also to change the way people view and treat older dog and cats, and to let senior pets enjoy the twilight of their lives through rescue, foster, adoption, and sanctuary.

Ultimately, Young at Heart will build a safe haven designed just for senior pets to house pets that are not yet placed, or that are unlikely to be placed. This homestead will allow Young at Heart to provide even more senior dogs and cats with a second chance.

Visit Adopt a Friend to learn more about how you help Young at Heart’s senior dogs and cats  . . .  and how you can help make their goal of a safe haven for these wonderful pets a dream come true!

Give Others Something to Be Thankful For, Too

Thanksgiving is next week, and as you prepare for your holiday PetravelR™ has a special Tuesday tip -

dog with bowlBe thankful for the unconditional love of the pets in your life and remember those pets who aren’t as fortunate.  When you are shopping for your Thanksgiving celebration, pick up some extra pet food and donate it to your local animal shelter or pet food bank.  Your contribution will help homeless animals and also help pet owners in unfortunate circumstances who have difficulty providing for their animals.  Pet food banks can make the difference between keeping those pets in their homes or having them turned into shelters.

So while you’re being thankful for what you have this year, make a donation that will give others something to be thankful for, as well.
