St Louis Dog Pool Parties!

Many of the community pools in the greater St. Louis, Missouri area offer end of season dog swims.  Here’s a list of the upcoming doggy splash parties with dates and locations.

St Louis Dog swim-Ann Dewig Flickr

PetravelR™ thinks these sound like lots of fun.  But be sure to check the details with individual rec centers and pools, because rules vary for different facilities.  For example, some pools don’t allow humans in the pools at all, some allow people to wade into the pool with their dog, some allow children and some some don’t,, etc.

All of the pools are going to require written proof that the dogs attending have had their shots and will expect you to clean up after your dog, so bring a shots record and your potty bags.

First Class Pet Travel – Coffee, Tea, or Milkbone?

American Airlines now offers specialty First Class pet cabins on certain transcontinental flights, where pet owners may easily secure a carrier, with a pup or cat inside, for a more comfortable  flight.

AA first class dogs 2

Passengers traveling First Class on select flights between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), and between JFK and San Francisco (SFO) on American’s A321T planes can place their pets in special compartments adjacent to the owner’s seat.  There are two pet cabins per plane, each large enough to comfortably accommodate a carrier up to 19″ by 13″ by nine” if hard-sided, or a little larger if soft-sided.  The charge for these cabins is the same as American’s standard $125 carry-on pet fee.

AA first class dogs

The special pet cabins, known as “Cuddle Class,” must be reserved when you purchase your First Class ticket, and documentation from a veterinarian is required.

(Here at PetravelR™ we’re wondering if the pets in these compartments get more leg room than we had on our last flight in economy class.)

Tips for Taking Your Pet Camping

PetravelR™ wants to share these useful tips for camping with your pet, courtesy of petMD -

  • Use a sturdy crate with rigid plastic walls attached to your car’s interior to transport your pet, or a quality crash-tested vehicle harness.
  • Have your pet wear a collar or chest harness adorned with an identifying tag and/or embroidered with the pet’s name and your phone number.
  • Microchip your pet and make sure the ID number is registered with your current contact information.
  • Monitor the temperature to protect your dog against hypothermia and frostbite in cold weather, and heat-related illnesses in warm weather.  Pets lose some heat through their paw pads and skin, but not enough to maintain normal body temperature in hot weather.
  • Short-faced cat and dog breeds are more prone to heat-induced health problems.  Puppies and kittens and geriatric (older than seven years), sick, overweight, obese, and disabled pets are also more susceptible.
  • Properly and thoroughly protect your pets against fleas, ticks, and mosquitos that spread life-threatening bacterial, parasitic, or viral infections, such as Lyme Disease. Ask your veterinarian for the most effective products and medications for you pet.
  • Always walk your dog on a short, flat lead (not an extendable lead) and never leave a dog tied up at your campsite unobserved.
  • Be alert to predators! Coyote, hawks, bears, wolves, and others can attack and kill your pet.  Raccoons, possum, and other smaller animals can bite your pet, causing significant wound trauma and spreading potentially fatal disease.
  • It’s always a good idea to have your pet examined by your veterinarian within a few weeks before leaving on your camping trip.
