But a gift certificate for a pet adoption is a great way to give the love of a pet!

PetravelR™ urges you to support your local shelters and rescues by adopting, volunteering, and donating. And remember that spaying and neutering helps reduce overpopulation and makes your pets better family member!

Dog-Friendly Lake George Beach State Park

The Adirondacks Mountains are the perfect summer vacation spot, and if you’re traveling with your dog PetravelR™ recommends a trip to Lake George Beach State Park.

Lake George canoe with dog

Lake George, at the southeastern base of the mountains, is the largest lake in the Adirondacks, measuring 32 miles long. The lake offers many recreational opportunities, including boating and swimming.  Million Dollar Beach is the largest and most well-known beach in Lake George, with lifeguards, showers, picnic areas and plenty of room to swim.  The beach is part of the Lake George Beach State Park, located in Lake George’s Southern basin.  (Admission to Million Dollar Beach is free, but parking is $10 for cars and $4 for motorcycles.)

While Million Dollar Beach is a favorite with human beach-goers, the stretch of beach between Million Dollar Beach and the Lake George Steamboat Company is the place to take your canine companion for a swim. The area is known to locals as the Lake George dog beach. Although no human swimming is allowed along this stretch of beach, many people bring their dogs to enjoy time in the water.  Sounds like a great way to spend a summer afternoon!

Cruzin Crusaders

Cruising for a Cause

The Animal Welfare League was founded in 1935 to stop the suffering of animals that seemed common place in Chicagoland.  The AWL is committed to helping every pet find a good home. Their motto is “recovery is the answer, not euthanasia” for animals that come to us injured, neglected, or abused.

The Animal Welfare League’s founding shelter, located at 6224 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, still exists today as the only humane society on the south side of Chicago, providing shelter and care to homeless and needy animals and valuable services to residents in the area such as low cost clinic services to pet owners on a limited income and no-charge monthly pet food distribution.  The AWL opened a second shelter in southwest suburban Chicago Ridge in 1974 to expand the care and services that were desperately needed in the south suburban area and, in May 1992, moved into a state-of-the-art, full service shelter that can accommodate the increase in the number of homeless and unwanted animals, housing the largest number of adoptable animals from a non-profit organization in the entire mid-west.

Travel Toy for Your Kitty

If you’re looking for something to entertain your cat while traveling, check out Supercat Catnip Caves.

Catnip Caves 1

What cat doesn’t love playing with a bag – and these contain irresistible catnip.  SuperCat Catnip Caves are basically paper bags infused with catnip.  The Catnip Caves Cat Toy employs the same technology as Scratch ‘N Sniff stickers to release catnip scent when rubbed, buffed, crumpled, or scratched.  When your furball plays with this toy, each movement releases a nose-pleasing whiff.

Each Catnip Caves Cat Toy constantly releases enticing catnip scent for approximately six weeks for a long lasting catnip experience.  Made in the USA, Supercat Catnip Caves are sold in packages of 4.

PetravelR™ thinks these are great for traveling – they are lightweight and easy to pack.  You might also try them as a treat or distraction when you travel but poor kitty gets left at home with a pet sitter.

Catnip Caves 2

Available at numerous brick and mortar and online retailers including  OldMaidCatLady, DrsFosterandSmith, and PetFoodDirect for about $5 per pack, plus shipping.

No More Videos of Rabbits in the Bath – PLEASE!

Today’s PetravelR™ pet tip comes to you courtesy of The Dodo -

Rabbits, much like cats, are fastidiously clean creatures, and a healthy rabbit will likely never need a bath. Most rabbits also dislike water.

rabbit advocates Natasha

But more importantly, baths are also dangerous for rabbits, and sometimes even fatal. Wet fur can lead to hypothermia or a respiratory infection; hot water or blow-dryers can scald their skin. Water in their ears can lead to ear infections. Damp fur can lead to parasitic infestations like fly-strike.  Even worse, baths are highly stressful. Rabbits are very delicate creatures — though they would never admit it — and the shock and stress of being bathed can actually kill them by triggering fatal gastrointestinal stasis or even a heart attack.

Yet, there are dozens of videos circulating on the internet showing rabbits getting baths - rabbits lounging on their backs in sinks, cute babies getting baths, rabbits in six inches of water trying to flick the wetness off their paws.

IF YOU CARE ABOUT RABBITS, DO NOT SHARE THESE VIDEOS!  Instead, ask the host to remove the video as inappropriate and send a link to this blog or The Dodo article to the person who forwarded the video to you.
