GPS Pet Tracker

Most people know that it’s a really good idea to have pets microchipped so that they can be easily identified if lost.  But you can also buy a GPS tracking device that attaches to your pet’s collar and lets you track your dog or cat’s movements in real time.

The Tagg GPS Pet Tracker is one monitoring device and service (there are others available) that allows you to keep track of your pet wherever he or she goes.

  • Tagg uses cellular and GPS technology to pinpoint your pet’s location anywhere in the U.S.
  • If you ever need it, Tagg provides maps and directions so you can find your pet quickly and easily
  • Get texts, emails and even in-app notifications so you’ll know right away if your pet gets lost
  • Tagg also monitors your pets’ surroundings and alerts you when they get too hot or cold
  • Tagg can last up to 10 days, and recharges in about an hour
  • The Tagg device is waterproof, so your dog can swim with it

Tagg 4Tagg 2

The Tagg GPS Pet Tracker even lets you define your pet’s home base and tells you if they wander off.  Ah, now PetravelR™ gets it – this works just like the ankle bracelet Neal Caffrey wore in White Collar!

The Tagg Pet Tracker costs $80-$120, with monthly fees of $7-$10 for the required service plan.

A $1000 Bird Perch!

Do you have a pet parrot or cockatoo, or are you are thinking about adopting from Second Chance Bird Rescue or another bird rescue?  Then PetravelR™ has found the perfect birthday, anniversary or homecoming gift for your special bird!

Hammacher Schlemmer offers a Handcarved Coffea Tree Bird Perch for a mere $995.00, plus $100 shipping and handling.

Handcarved Coffea Tree Bird Perch

Painstakingly crafted from a single coffee tree that’s 25 to 35 years old, the perch is stripped of its bark, shaped and sanded by hand, and dried in a 150º F kiln to preserve its natural strength and durability. Unlike typical trees, the coffea tree’s twisting branches grow horizontally and have varied diameters, providing a comfortable perch for birds of any size to rest or walk on. The 4′-tall tree has seven to 10 branches that are spaced far enough apart to provide birds room to play and flap their wings, and the trunk has two three-dimensional birds carved into its surface. Two bowls affixed to the perch hold bird seed and two hanging toys will tempt even the most stoic bird to poke them with its beak. The 48″ x 32″ kamper wood base catches falling seeds and has four locking casters for ease of mobility.

The Handcarved Coffea Tree Bird Perch measures 48″ H x 66″ L x 32″ W and weighs 144 lbs. And the online order form makes it easy to change the quantity, just in case you want to buy two or three of these!

Animal Terminal Coming to JFK Airport

No, it’s not an exclusive pet-friendly airport terminal for passengers traveling with their companion animals (how cool would that be?).  It’s a special terminal for shipping animals, large or small, via air cargo.

ARK Development LLC has signed a 30-year lease with the NY/NJ Port Authority to build and manage a 178,000-square-foot state-of-the-art animal handling and air cargo facility at JFK International Airport in New York.  According to the company, “The ARK at JFK” will be the world’s only privately-owned animal handling cargo terminal and the first USDA-approved, full-service 24-hour airport quarantine facility for the import and export of horses, pets, cats and dogs, birds, zoo animals, and livestock.

The ARK at JFK will provide both airside and landside services to board, kennel, quarantine, import, export, and transport large and small animals.  It will also offer transportation in dedicated climate-controlled vehicles from aircraft, terminals, cargo facilities, and other airport locations.  Other features include an overnight pet boarding facility “Paradise 4 Paws,” an aviary for birds, and  a 24-hour veterinary hospital run by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

ARK JFK terminal

The Spot Experience, a New York-based pet services provider, will operate the terminal and transport facility.  The ARK is projected to transport about 70,000 animals a year.

PetravelR™ strongly prefers to either drive or – when air travel is the best or only option – have pets fly in the passenger cabin.  But if you need to make a transatlantic move with your horse or are relocating to Japan with your Saint Bernard, the ARK may be worth checking out.

Phinney’s Friends is an all-volunteer nonprofit that helps low-income people in the Boston area keep their pets when they are going through hardships. They believe that the human-animal bond is a source of love, joy, comfort and fulfillment for both people and their pets. That’s why they help people keep this bond with their animals.  Phinney’s volunteers educate pet owners, take their animals to the vet, foster pets when owners are hospitalized, walk dogs and care for cats on a regular basis. The donations they receive go towards providing food and pet supplies for  clients and foster parents, and assisting with veterinarian bills or boarding costs. Phinney’s Friends helps pet owners in many ways. Some need regular support, some need help only once.
