Walk . . . there will never be a better time like this to Puppy Up! against cancer.  A cancer-free world starts with one dog, each mile at a time.

Celebrate National Cat Day!

Today is National Cat Day!

Natl Cat Day 2014

Have you bought a National Cat Day present for your special kitty?  Not to worry, PetravelR™ has found the purr-fect gift . . . an $800 Feline Tree House from Hammacher Schlemmer.

feline tree house

The Feline Tree House “lets felines indulge their primeval jungle instincts.”  Each tree house is handcrafted from a mature dragonwood tree harvested from sustainable forests in Florida and Georgia, and takes 16 hours to build.  The 6-foot tall tree is left in its natural state (gnarled branches, bark, lichen and all) with three carpeted platforms tucked among the branches and a 16″ x 24″ carpeted base.  The carpeting is stain-resistant and held in place with hook-and-loop fasteners, allowing easy removal for cleaning.  There’s also realistic silk foliage to provide concealment (after all, what makes a cat happier than hiding and then pouncing on you?) and the sisal-wrapped trunk doubles as a scratching post.  The Feline Tree House is made in the USA and shipped fully assembled!

Available at Hammacher Schlemmer for a mere $799.95 plus $46.95 shipping (and the order page actually has a box labeled “How Many?” just in case you have multiple cats and want to buy a tree house for each one).

Alas, it takes 3-4 weeks for delivery, so PetravelR™ is afraid that it’s too late for National Cat Day, but there’s always Christmas or Hannukah or your cat’s birthday or the anniversary of the day you brought Kitty home from the shelter . . .

Dupage County (IL) Animal Care & Control on Adopt a Friend!

Dupage County Animal Care & Control in Wheaton, Illinois is featured this week on PetravelR’s™ Adopt a Friend.

Although it is a municipal shelter, DuPage County Animal Care & Control receives no government funding. Nonetheless, through the outstanding efforts of its staff and volunteers and community support, last year DCACC reached its goal of euthanizing zero animals in its care due to lack of shelter space.  That is quite an achievement, when you consider the fact that DCACC  is the only open admission shelter in the western suburbs of Chicago, and it cannot refuse any animal brought through its doors.

Dupage ShadowDupage SplinterDupage Tara

In addition to operating the animal shelter and adoption programs, DCACC provides humane education, enforces animal welfare laws, rescues lost and injured animals, and promotes responsible pet-ownership.  It relies on volunteers as well as the support of the Friends of DCACC Foundation, a tax exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit that raise funds to provide DCACC with the resources that its normal operating budget cannot furnish.

Please visit Adopt a Friend this week to learn more about DuPage County Animal Care & Control and the Friends of DCACC Foundation and how you can support their efforts to save homeless animals!

Black Cat Ball Fundraisers

Got plans for Saturday night?  Going to be in Washington State or Ohio?  Then PetravelR™ has just the event for you: a Black Cat Ball fundraiser for the animals!

There’s the 17th Annual Purrfect Pals Black Cat Ball in downtown Bellevue, Washington from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th.  This fun and festive Halloween-themed event at the Meydenbauer Center raises money for Purrfect Pals, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been helping Puget Sound cats and cat owners for over 25 years.

Purrfect Pals Black Cat Ball

Get your tickets for the Gala Dinner and Auction featuring over 500 items for sale in a silent and live auction, a champagne reception, and a sumptuous three-course vegetarian or vegan dinner including wine.

Purrfect Pals finds loving homes for homeless cats, including those with special needs.  They take in in the cats and kittens who need them the most… those who other shelters and rescue groups might not have the resources to help.  This includes older cats, cats with major medical needs, cats with chronic illnesses (including FIV and Feline Leukemia) and those with behavioral challenges. Purrfect Pals helps prevent cat homelessness by assisting low-income cat owners in our community with a weekly free spay and neuter clinic, low cost vaccines and flea treatment, and their pet food bank. They also offer these services to caretakers of feral and free-roaming colonies.

Jo Dee

Purrfect Pals does not receive any government funding and is supported solely by donations.  You can support their programs to help cats and cat owners by sponsoring a shelter cat, legacy giving, purchasing Purrfect Pals merchandise, or making an online donation.

The Lake Humane Society will hold its 6th annual Black Cat Ball & Silent Auction Saturday from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the LaMalfa Centre in Mentor, Ohio.  Enjoy a night of gourmet food, drinks, prize giveaways, games, dancing and more!  The event features a huge Silent Auction with a variety of wonderful prizes. There will also be sideboards, a casino wheel, the mystery door, a card reader, and other activities.  Dress up and compete for prizes in the costume contest. (Costumes are not required.)
